FREDERICK, MD – Artist, Yemi, says he began his career in New York City, but explains his heart always belonged in Frederick.
“Being a sensitive artist, I just want peace and quiet and when I got to Frederick, it was like wow, look at this place, the rolling hills, the clean air and the people were so nice,” explained Yemi, who prefers to go by just his first name.
As a tribute to the city, Yemi designed a storefront for The Frederick Basket Company that displays the city incorporated into a horse drawn carriage.
However, Yemi isn’t the only local artist to have some of his work at the store, many others already have their work on display and for sale.
“We really try to highlight the local artists, what you see today, they come in and they can pick out whatever they want, we try to find local foods, local artists,” explained Vicki Moore, owner of The Frederick Basket Company.
The wide variety of works available, including ceramics and floral designs, are just another example of the strong presence of arts in the community.
“Most of the time I’ll just get an idea in my head,” said Michael Toomey, who designs floral arrangements, “A lot of times I’ll sit down and think of an arrangement or think of something I want to do, color scheme and I’ll just start. I view each piece as an individual piece of art.”
As for residents looking to get into business, The Frederick Basket Company offers them a unique opportunity.
“It’s been very helpful for me being a business owner for the first time and giving me the chance to put it out there and see and they’ve done very well,” explained Kelly Misotti, who designs sugar shapes for bridal showers and other celebrations.
The Frederick Basket Company is located at 12 North East Street in downtown Frederick.
